Originals Music Festival 2015 Review

Originals Music Festival
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The Originals Music Festival, held in the beachside town of Coolum (7 November), is now in its second year on the Sunshine Coast.

The sell-out was achieved on the morning of the event (struggling to remember the last time a festival sold out) and promoter Mark Pico told scenestr it was his favourite, vibe-wise, to date from 10 years of producing festivals.

Sticky Fingers, probably one of the hottest acts in the country right now, suffered a delayed start as there was a crowd vs barrier safety issue that had to be dealt with. How is “take one step back” so hard to understand? When they did come out, they rocked out the sort of awesome set you'd expect from an act that sold out four consecutive shows at Sydney's Metro.

Agnes Blue were outstanding, a young male/ female duo of guitar and drums who rocked, reminiscent of a rather famous American duo of similar style while acts like Cheap Fakes, Timberwolf and Bootleg Rascal had the crowd nicely prepped for the early evening acts.

Dallas Frasca rocked! They rocked freakin’ hard! High-powered vocals and acrobatic, pointy-guitar riffage – what more could you ask for! The heat of the day was finally relieved by what threatened to be a huge storm. We were spared though as not a drop of rain fell on the festival just clear sky (hail falling just 2 klms away) and a cool breeze to greet the evening performers.

Pierce Brothers
, fresh from a European tour with The Cat Empire, delivered a brilliant set. I was super happy to hear them after catching the tail end of a set at the 2014 Caloundra Music Festival. The way these boys delivered their set, I think that I could see one of their shows every week and not get bored of them.

Hometown boys OKA were entrancing. The band embody the meaning of fusion. I don’t quite know how to describe them, but whatever it is it makes you want to move your body.

Regurgitator were in fine form, playing an awesome, high-energy set from their back catalogue of hits. They rocked it to a crowd of mostly kids who probably weren’t even alive when they were in their hey-day, but who will now download their music.
