Open Letter From Loki Liddle About Horizon Festival's First Nations Showcase Coast To Coast

Coast To Coast is a Horizon Festival showcase of First Nations youth music, visual arts and spoken word poetry.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

In collaboration with Digi Youth Arts (DYA), Sunshine Coast's Horizon Festival presents Coast To Coast, a virtual showcase of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

An online, creative coastal exchange showcasing music, spoken word and visual arts works, Coast To Coast is a part of remake-regenerate-reclaim and has been supported by the Australian Government's Indigenous Languages and Arts programme.

Artists involved include Kane Brunjes, Andrew Coleman, Emily Coleman, Cormac Finn, Eleea, Loki Liddle, Nadia Morrison and Jain Rhys.

Loki is a Jabirr Jabirr man based on the Gold Coast. His creative outlets include his band Selve, performance poetry, playing as a member of The Ancient Bloods and producing for DYA.

Ahead of the Coast To Coast showcase this Friday (14 August at 7pm EST), Loki shares a few thoughts about what viewers can expect.

On this Friday (14 August) Horizon Festival will be streaming Coast To Coast, which will feature a series of performances by First Nations artists based in the 'so-called' Sunny Coast and Gold Coast regions.

Coast To Coast is a celebration of young and talented First Nations artists, and aims to connect and showcase young artists who have connections and ties to these two distinct coasts who rarely get the opportunity to collaborate, especially in these times.

It is an exciting programme that will feature musical performances, poetry performances, visual arts displays and introductions from older First Nations artists and arts workers who have paved the way that our young artists follow behind.

The six artists who will be presenting are: Kane Brunjes (visual art), Reece Bowden (music), Andrew Coleman (music), Cormac Finn (music), ELEEA (music), Nadia Morrison (music) and myself (poetry).

The production was brought together by Associate Artistic Director Emily Coleman (I was the Assistant Producer), under the guidance of the infamous Alethea Beetson.

Not only will Coast To Coast be a presentation of deadly artists who will naturally blow minds, it is also an essential artistic and cultural event that deserves to have a highlighted platform in these times and at all times.

Coast To Coast is formed by the voices of the youngest generation of the world's oldest living culture. And in a time when these voices are being silenced and challenged, it is important that we open our ears, eyes and minds to productions that have been created entirely by First Nations people on our own terms and under our own definition and direction.

Coast To Coast is such an event. So if you are interested in supporting First Nations youth, or just in engaging with an awesome artistic experience, then tune on Friday at 7pm and check out Coast To Coast.

Our First Nations young people are the future of this country. Following in the footsteps of an ancient culture that has been here since the first sunrise and will continue till the last. Our culture is not just a piece of history to look back on, it is alive now and making itself heard through both new and ancient art forms.

So tune in! Engage! Listen! And enjoy.
