Open Frame 2024 Line-up

L-R top to bottom: Kim Gordon, Joep Beving, Keiji Haino, Hand To Earth & Carl Stone

Open Frame returns to Brisbane Powerhouse next month for four unique showcase events featuring a music icon alongside an eclectic mix of underground artists experimenting and innovating with sound.

After a successful return event in 2023, Open Frame is curated by Room40's director Lawrence English who celebrates the lifelong practices of DIY artists from across the globe.

A culture provocateur without comparison, Kim Gordon's reach into the post-punk, riot grrl communities of the last 40 years is undeniable, firstly as a founding member of Sonic Youth that has bled into a solo career fusing punk, noise, and experimental rock.

Gordon – who is a seminal figure – will perform her 2024 solo album 'The Collective' at Open Frame (21 July).

From dark blues and the psychedelic, to electronic curiosities and cinematic sounds, Open Frame kicks off (18 July) with a triple bill of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Eiko Ishibashi.

An artist combining elements of rock, noise, improvised music, and drone, Keiji Haino is a Japanese musician active since the early 1970s when he was lead singer of avant-garde rock group Lost Aaraaf.

A member of Gastr Del Sol, Fennoberg, Loose Fur, The Red Krayola, and Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke is a Grammy Award-winning producer who has worked with the likes of Wilco, Sonic Youth, Beth Orton, Stereolab, Joanna Newsom and many others.

A multi-instrumentalist as well as a singer-songwriter whose original albums have been released by Drag City, Black Truffle, and Editions Mego, Japanese artist Eiko Ishibashi's work has also scored film, television, theatre and exhibition projects.

The Friday night of Open Mind (19 July) will see four distinct artists combine for the ultimate fusion of sounds when Carl Stone, Hand To Earth, Chihei Hatakeyama and Nyokabi Kariũki gather onstage.

A godfather of American electronic music, Carl Stone has literally sculpted the possibilities of rhythm, texture and harmony since the late '60s. Hand To Earth elude genre, traversing continents and fusing ancient and contemporary sounds for open ears with a 40,000-plus-year-old oral tradition from South East Arnhem Land.

A renowned ambient composer from Tokyo, Hatakeyama is responsible for a catalog of shimmering, oceanic works that build upon minimalist structures. Kenyan sound artist Nyokabi Kariuki is part of an emergent generation of eclectic sound explorers, expanding pathways into zones of experimental and contemporary sonic traditions.

Then for the Saturday instalment (20 July), Open Frame will serve up the trio of Joep Beving, Peter Knight and Aviva Endean.

A contemporary classical artist, Beving returns to his solo piano roots with his latest album 'Hermetism' that he describes as "a quiet revolt against the madness". Beving will be supported by Australian composer/ trumpeter Peter Knight and clarinetist, composer and sound artist, Aviva Endean.

Complementing the Open Frame live music programme are two cinematic marvels at Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema.

• 'Opus | Ryuichi Sakamoto' (19 July): One final performance: a concert film, featuring just a man and his piano
• '1991: The Year Punk Broke' (20 July): A documentary of life on the road with Sonic Youth and Nirvana during their tour of Europe in late 1991

Tickets are on sale.

Open Frame takes place at Brisbane Powerhouse 18-21 July.
