Police have released CCTV footage of a man wanted for questioning over the unprovoked attack on The Growl bass player Marc Earley that could end his musical career.

Earley and two other members of the band were in an Oporto on Oxford Street in Surry Hills last month when they were approached by the man, who began abusing them. He allegedly grabbed Earley's right ring finger and snapped it at a right angle, fracturing it in two places, before fleeing the restaurant.

The attack occurred around 3:30am on February 3, just hours after The Growl had played at Sydney's St Jerome's Laneway Festival.

Earley will have to undergo a year of rehabilitation before he will know whether he'll regain enough movement to play the guitar again. His bandmates, including Cam Avery (who is also in Tame Impala), raised more than $28,000 online for Earley's surgery and rehabilitation.

The CCTV footage released by the police shows a man walking up to the fast food restaurant's counter and appearing to order food, before wiping his hands clean. You can view the footage here.

Growl AttackerPolice describe the man as being in his 40s with an olive complexion; about 178 centimetres tall with short brown hair.
