Nominations have opened for Western Australia's annual premier songwriting competition, WAM's Song Of The Year.
First established in 1989, the annual Song Of The Year competition, coordinated by WAM and presented by Act-Belong-Commit, invites songwriters, musicians and bands across Western Australia to submit their songs for a chance to win across multiple categories. The songs are anonymously and independently judged by an expansive range of music industry experts.
"Entries are open to WA songwriters and artists of all ages and levels, who have written a song between March 2024 and February 2025. Please note entrants must have been residing in WA for the majority of the past 12 months.
"There are 17 categories to enter this year, plus our Song For Sophie Award for under 25 entrants. Winners of the competition are set to receive recording time, industry and cash prizes."
A Song For Sophie is an award developed in honour of local music enthusiast and artist Sophie Smith, and is possible thanks to the Sophie Smith Fund, held with the Fremantle Foundation.
A Song For Sophie is a unique, free additional category, which Song Of The Year entrants under 25, can optionally enter to be judged by a specialist panel, as part of the Song Of The Year Competition. The winner will receive a cash prize of $2,500 and an exclusive mentoring programme with a renowned local artist Jordi Davieson from San Cisco.
The judging criteria for this award will focus on lyrics that demonstrate a deep connection with human emotions, something that Sophie was passionate about. WAM is proud to honour Sophie's legacy by developing and nurturing local talent and celebrating West Australian music.
Nominations strictly close at 9am AWST on Tuesday 4 March.
