Flying high with new single ‘Who Will Love You Now,’ Mitzi’s Cale Suesskow discusses the group’s trajectory.
The vocalist has been “blown away” by Mitzi’s takeoff. “I've been in lots of other bands before, and nothing comes close. Within the first couple of months we were making a record and touring. Nothing had ever happened that quickly for me before.
“It's been great, especially in the online world, there's been lots of blog love all over the place. What more can you ask for?”
Not much, it seems. Their upcoming headlining tour is Mitzi’s biggest yet, with a new album Truly Alive slated for release in early 2013. Impressive stuff for a bunch of disco revivalists.
Cale admits their sound has evolved somewhat. “The album only has a couple of those disco songs. There's some clubbier ones, and some slower RnB inspired ones. It does have a lot of the same elements though, like live drums and some synth over the top, and the vocals flow in the same way.”
Fans can expect to hear some of the material on Mitzi’s upcoming tour, which Cale says is all about newness.
“We're really excited, this will be the first time we've played a lot of these ones, I think we're only playing a couple of old ones. We're all super keen to play these new songs, and we've bought a bunch of new gear that we're using for the first time on this tour as well. And we've got some live visuals synced up that we've never done before, so yeah, a whole bunch of new stuff.”
To be honest, it’s amazing they’ve had such success under a moniker that sounds like a pet poodle. Cale blames his bandmates Dom and Jad.
“They first started Mitzi as a side project from their other group, but didn’t want anyone to know who they were. So they came up with having the name of a woman and hiding behind that, but never ended up coming up with a surname. Then when we started playing together as a four piece and writing, we thought about getting a new name. Everything we spoke about sounded kind of corny and try hard, and we just ended up thinking, 'stuff it, lets just stick with Mitzi'.”
