Inspired by the songs she recorded for ABC's political series 'Total Control' (starring Deborah Mailman and Rachel Griffiths) as well as the recent abuse allegations emerging from Canberra, Missy Higgins is set release a mini-album next month.
Also titled 'Total Control', the title track is a beautiful rendition of The Motels 1980 classic of the same name."You all know about how I've written all these songs for the ABC TV drama 'Total Control', you've already heard 'Edge Of Something' (and maybe more if you've been paying attention to live performances!). . . well today I'm releasing another track, the title track to the show, 'Total Control' by The Motels, one of my all time favs.
"I absolutely loved creating our own version of it. And even more exciting news. . . Drum roll. . . today pre-orders begin for my new mini-album, which will be released 4 March.
"I am very very proud of this project. The album includes all the songs I wrote for and inspired by the TV show, reimagined and co-produced by none other than my friend Brendon Love from The Teskey Brothers.
"It was an epic undertaking making this album during endless lockdowns and restrictions. Some of it was done at home when we weren't allowed to meet, some of it was squeezed into the short moments of time we had between lockdowns in Melbourne.
"This is an album about taking control as a woman. About taking back what's yours. The right to write your own story. About finding strength through your love for your family, and your connections to your history.
"It touches on the bravery of Brittany Higgins and Grace Tame, and everyone else standing up for themselves these days in a culture that doesn't always make them feel safe to do so.
"It's very much inspired by the strong First Nations women I know and see who are standing up proud and telling their story, shouting it loud so no one can cover their ears, no one can pretend they don't hear.
"It's about anyone trying to fight their way to a place where they don't have to fight any more. Here's to a new year, 2022. New stories. New songs. New chapters for all of us. I hope you get something from it."
Missy has a stack of live dates and festival appearances throughout 2022 including SummerSalt, By The C and new festival series Wildflower; more information.
"Like lots of people, I guess I'm trying to make up for lost time," Missy explains.
"The last two years made me realise how much I missed playing music for people, so I want to get out there and do it while we all can. I'm not taking anything for granted anymore."
'Total Control' is set for release 4 March. Pre-order it.
