It's often said that to truly appreciate the American dream, talk to an immigrant.
But then, to truly appreciate the paradoxes of American life, talk to the child born in America to the immigrant.
Lastly, to really and truly appreciate how those paradoxes can shape a confused, artistic-minded, caught-in-the-middle-of-so-many-subcultures human... Michael DeLara is your man.
Growing up he was a part of a collection of different groups that, although he was part of, he never felt truly aligned with. American but not white... Catholic but rebelliously spiritual... Jock but performance artist... Artist but jock.
When Michael was born, birth certificates only had three options: white, black and other. As a Filipino-American kid, Michael was identified, for the first four years of his life, as legally black.
This show is a look at America through the eyes of an outsider who has never been able to find a home anywhere. Michael will investigate the arbitrary divisions that most people just sits back and accepts through music and observations. He asks, “What else could be possible if truly saw these [divisions] as they are: Just a choice?”
Michael is very keen to bring 'Living Between The Lines', his one-man show, to Perth, grooving with his voice, guitar, and loop pedal (venue permitting), he lays out the musical tapestry of his show developed from his years working in pubs, cruise ships, and venues all over the world.
“I’ve been told my show 'reinvented the form (of a one-man show)'. So, coming to Fringe World after premiering at the 2018 Hollywood Fringe is beyond a dream. To see how such great audiences and artists react? It excites me more than you can imagine.”
Join him for a topical, improvised, night of music.
