Mental As Anything

Fifty years since they formed, Aussie legends Mental As Anything have reunited with original members Peter O'Doherty and Reg Mombassa.

After revealing a new band documentary last month alongside a number of festival appearances including Bluesfest, the 'Live It Up' icons will headline run of concerts in June.

The tour will visit Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

It's the first time in 25 years that Peter O'Doherty and Reg Mombassa have performed with the Mentals, the brothers leading a new band line-up that features Shannon Stitt (keyboard, vocals), Declan O'Doherty (drums, vocals – Peter's son) and Simon Rudston-Brown (guitar, vocals).

Original drummer David Twohill will also make appearances at select shows, while co-founder Martin Plaza will not be available due to ill health.

With 25 Top 40 hits in Australia, Mental As Anything's catalogue also includes beloved classics such as 'The Nips Are Getting Bigger', 'If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?', 'Too Many Times', 'Come Around', 'Berserk Warriors', 'Spirit Got Lost' and 'You're So Strong'.

Titled 'Live It Up: The Mental As Anything Story', and written-directed by Matthew Walker (whose documentary 'I'm Wanita' won Best Australian Documentary at Sydney Film Festival in 2021), the documentary film features never before seen archival footage.

It also contains exclusive interviews with group members Reg Mombassa, Peter O'Doherty, David Twohill and other original member Martin Plaza, as well as members of the band's inner circle.

The film will release in Australian cinemas from 5 March. "It's slightly weird to think that we started the Mentals 50 years ago, but that's how time works," Reg Mombassa says.

"The film captures the humour and the energy and the art and personalities of the band members. I am grateful that I was able to be in an interesting and popular band and I feel proud of our legacy."

Ticket on sale from 10am (local time) on 2 March.
