'Cry Baby' alt-pop artist, Melanie Martinez brings her 'Portals' world tour to Australia in early 2024 with three east-coast shows.
'The Voice' US alum – whose music has been compared to everyone from The Dresden Dolls to Lana Del Rey and Lorde – released 'Portals', her third full-length studio album, earlier this year. When reviewing the album, Sam Franzani of The Line Of Best Fit wrote the album's track 'Battle Of The Larynx' is five minutes that detail serious sexual assault allegations levelled against the singer in 2017, which were proven to be false.
"Don't you battle with my larynx tonight," Martinez intones in the song's lyrics. "I'll wreck you if you chase me / But I'll be silent till you cross the line."
The experimental pop album, which was preceded by the singles 'Death' and 'Void', debuted at #1 on the Australian Albums Chart, becoming her first number one release down under.
Featuring her alter-ego Cry Baby reborn as a fantastical pink creature – some say fairy, others say alien – Martinez explains the deeper meaning behind the album's tracks.
"All of the songs on this album are based on past life regression therapy books I've been reading for a few years now, particularly the in-between phase of death and life.
"All of them disguised with earthly themes for double/ triple meaning, to create a frequency for humans to relate to while still here on earth."
Upon the album's release, Martinez added: "I hope the weight of mortality that society has placed on people becomes lighter.
"I hope grief becomes easier for people while listening to this record. That they can enjoy this life to the fullest knowing that we're all just here to grow, create, feel, and have shared experiences with one another to help each other evolve."
Tickets on sale from 3pm (local time) on 16 June.
