Meg Mac Review @ Black Bear Lodge, 2014

Meg Mac
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Vocal powerhouse Megan McInerney, better known as Meg Mac, performed at Brisbane's Black Bear Lodge on Thursday 25th September to a sold-out crowd.

Since winning Triple J’s Unearthed Falls Festival competition last year, the young Melbourne artist has been tipped to be one of the country's brightest new stars — and the soulful singer certainly lived up to high expectations.

From the opening moments of her show the true explosiveness of her voice is front and centre. Even with a full band behind her, her voice soared within the intimately packed venue.

With her sister alongside as her support vocalist throughout the night, a harmonious balance between the two helped to build some of the shows more intimate moments. They combined delicately for their rendition of ‘Grandma’s Hands’, one of the shows hidden gems and true highlights, leaving many in the audience nursing goosebumps.

Her voice has almost been stolen from another era. Warm with soul and wrapped with the complexity and experience of a seasoned performer, never missing a note. Onlookers were entranced by her poised stage presence and seemed connected with her gentle nature and banter between songs.

She belted out ‘Known Better’, the bluesy ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’, as well as ‘Turning’ — a beautifully crafted piece of music.

In the dimly lit Black Bear Lodge, Meg seemed to generate the performance scaled better to a stadium tour.

When Meg Mac reaches the heights that her talent deserves, many last Thursday will look back and say: "I was there when Meg Mac performed on her first national tour and she killed it!".
