It's time to fall in love with Meg Mac all over again as the brooding singer-songwriter lifts the lid on her debut, studio album, 'Low Blows'.
Released in mid-July, 'Low Blows' is the follow-up to Meg's smashing introductory, 2014 self-titled EP and she says her goal was to have the songs on the record sound the way they do when she writes them. “I write my songs at the piano, so usually it's just me by myself at home with the piano,” Meg says.
“My favourite thing to do is playing live and doing shows, and I wanted to somehow in the studio recreate the same feeling I can get at home when I play piano and at shows. I wanted that real-life feeling, that's what I was going for.”

Meg recorded 'Low Blows' in Fort Worth, Texas at Niles City Sound Studio where soul singer-songwriter Leon Bridges recorded his 2015 debut album 'Coming Home', which Meg says was the key motivator to record there.
“I'd heard the Leon Bridges album and that was all recorded live-to-tape and I got really obsessed with that album and how they made it, so I ended up going to Fort Worth, Texas, to meet the team behind the album and ended up making my album there.
“The whole studio, even the mic stands and the foldback wedges are really old and the original thing, so to me it looks like a movie set of a studio in the '70s, but if someone was around then it probably looks normal,” she laughs.
Meg has already had fans reeling with her performance at Splendour In The Grass in July and will be heading out on a national tour for 'Low Blows' in September. Meg says her focus at the moment is to make the show as exciting as she can, but is also looking forward to being able to dig deep on her softer-sounding songs.
“I'll get to play some of the more intimate songs that you can't really do on a festival stage,” she says. “I'll get to have the quieter moments which will be nice. [At a festival] you just want to keep the energy up I guess; there's so many people there you want to keep it exciting and fast-paced.”
Though only recently released, Meg says she has already received a lot of positive feedback from fans for 'Low Blows'.
“It's been interesting to hear from people that had heard it before it came out; everyone seemed to like a certain song and then when it came out people were coming up with songs that I was surprised to hear people had made their favourite.
“It's nice to hear people saying the lyrics mean something to them, that's always cool to hear how someone else can interpret it.”
'Low Blows' is available now.
