MC Wheels: Moving On Up

MC Wheels
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With a documentary about his life set to debut later this month, young Sunshine Coast rapper MC Wheels is quickly building a reputation for himself.

We caught up with the rising rapper to talk about the doco, his appearance at hip hop fundraiser Get On Up, and the highlights of his young career.

What does it mean to you to be a part of Get On Up, an all-ages, hip-hop workshop / fundraiser / concert?
To be a part of Get On Up is awesome to me, because you're showing kids what you desire to be is possible with hard work and determination and passion.

What are you looking forward to about the concert?
I'm looking forward to getting back on stage and performing some new songs. And seeing Stik N Move and Boi Blue perform.

Your documentary, ‘Magic Of Life’, will premiere in your home town on the Sunshine Coast later this month. How are you feeling about that?
Yeah, we are very excited about the doco. It's been a long time in the making. The response has been great, the people who have seen it have enjoyed it.

What initially drove you to take part in the documentary?
It was put to me by Live Life Productions who made it. I can't remember if I was OK with it at the time but I warmed up to the idea. And it has been one of the best decisions I have made.

You released your first album (‘My Introduction’) earlier this year. What’s the response been like so far?
My fans loved it — people telling me they don't like hip hop but like my hip hop music. A couple of tracks have been played on radio which is awesome and I've sent it to some of the best hip hop artists in Australia and some have listened to it. The main theme is how I was lost for years and then I found music, which saved my life and it's made me a better person.

What has been your favourite performance you’ve given so far?
I think when I got five minutes on the main stage at Sprung Hip Hop Festival in 2012. We performed in front of 5,000 or more people — it was insane, best show I’ve done. I’ll never forget it.

MC Wheels performs at Get On Up at Expressive Grounds, Palm Beach, Saturday December 14 with Stik N Move, Christian James, Baden and DJ Jesswah.
