MC Lars: The Nerdcore Icon

MC Lars
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

With irreverent, witty lyrics filled with references to pop culture staples like 'Game Of Thrones', 'The Simpsons' and 'Star Wars', California rapper MC Lars' latest album, 'The Zombie Dinosaur LP', stays true to his cheeky, satirical style.

Tell us about the new LP, 'The Zombie Dinosaur': are you the zombie dinosaur?
You caught the metaphor! It's the third in my 'Trilogy Of Terror'. I had a robot album, an alien invasion album so I figured it was time for the third scariest thing.

Are you excited to be touring Australia again? It's been a few years since we last saw you.
So excited! Can't believe it will be my fifth Aussie run. My Dad is from Melbourne: I can't wait to see old fans and family.

You've toured and performed with so many great artists, do you have a favourite? Or someone you'd never work with again?
There's no one I wouldn't work with again. Bowling For Soup and Mega Ran are two of my favourites. Great dudes.

'The Zombie Dinosaur' features a track called 'Dragon Blood' that references 'Game Of Thrones'. I take it you're a big fan of the show?
Huge fan! Love the Shakespearean power dynamics and the mercurial quality of goodness and badness. Can't wait for the new season.

Your music has been called 'nerdcore'. Do you think that's accurate?
I am totally fine with the term, even though it's more MC Frontalot's term. The new Drake video could be considered 'nerdcore'; it's really crossed over.

Is writing the titles of your songs half the fun: coming up with the most appropriate pun or reference?
Yes! I always try to come up with titles first. A good pun goes a long way in the age of social media.

There are plenty of literary references in your songs – Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare – is that a particular interest of yours?
I majored in literature in college so definitely. My first songs were lit-hop: for more info check out my TED talk on rap's connection to literature, I go deep!

Did you always want to write satirical, fun songs?
I have written and released tons of serious songs, but the funny ones have tended to get more attention (with the exception of 'Twenty-Three', maybe). I've never been too concerned with how I'm remembered, I just go with my heart and synthesise my influences.

You have your own record label now as well, Horris Records. How did that come about?
It was a way to release albums myself. I did the Coheed drummer's rap album, he goes by Weerd Science. He's the only other artist I've put out, other than my work with YTCracker and K.Flay.

How did you become involved with the AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)?
A college friend took his life right after college. I wanted to raise awareness about mental illness, I miss him every day. My manager reached out and we released my 'Twenty-Three' single with their help. RIP Pat.

Any big plans for the future? Do you see yourself focussing more on the producing side of things?
Definitely! [I'm] doing an album with Mega Ran, a TV show, a book and a musical. It's going to be a busy year. Thanks for spreading the word about the tour!
