With the release last month of their modern reinterpretation of the Journey classic 'Don’t Stop Believin'', Mashd N Kutcher continue their rise as champs of the Australian EDM scene.
After only three years as Mashd N Kutcher, the duo of Matt Minor and Adam Morris have cemented themselves as one of the most prominent electronic music acts in Australia. 'Don't Stop Believin'', which features LA-based musician Addison, looks set to continue the pair's upward trajectory.
“We're massive fans of Journey and 'Don't Stop Believin'' is a pretty iconic record,” Matt says.
“We're not trying to rewrite the book here, we just thought we would put another spin on it. It's a record we love playing in our live shows, so we thought we would make the dance version. There's a bunch of mash-ups and remixes of it, but there wasn’t a proper club version so we thought we'd better make one.
“We are a nation built on pub rock and it's a pretty standard pub-rock track. Everyone knows the words and everyone gets around it. We're stoked with it.”
Recently finishing up a European tour, the lads are set to return home for a cluster of Australian shows.
“There's a lot of cool new pop records out on the radio [so] we are giving them a run, Matt says.
"We're digging back into the classics like Journey, Bon Jovi or Queen. Just a mixed of old-new. We tend to play some pretty mental stuff in our sets so the crowd reflects that. They're a pretty boisterous and rowdy bunch.”
Mashd N Kutcher are known to be pranksters during their live performances, having recently released a video that went viral of the duo punking a German crowd of 10,000 with the iconic Australian National Tiles advertisement, featuring Frank Walker.
“My mum had a sales job so I was always in the car with her and that ad just got drilled into me when I was a kid. I thought it was about time it got drilled into Germany.
“[Their reaction] was dismal and that's exactly what we wanted. There were about 10,000 in front of us and out of that there would have been about half a dozen Aussies in the crowd. There was one Aussie flag directly in the middle that went up.”
Matt hints that we may find out how an Aussie crowd reacts in the same situation when Mashd N Kutcher tour Australia.
“I think it's all going to come together in the next couple months. We'll be playing pub-rock classics in front of Aussie crowds and we might bring Frank Walker out to a show.”
