Marten Horger Hearts Canadian Bacon

Marten Horger
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

Hailed publicly by the likes of Stanton Warriors, Krafty Kuts and Plump DJs, German bass producer Marten Horger is building a formidable reputation.

Bass, breaks music, as we head into 2014... where is the scene at in your opinion? I have a feeling that 2014 is going to be a great year for all of us. So many people even from outside our scene are doing breakbeat right now. I feel very inspired by all this.

How was your recent tour of Canada... any tales you'd like to share? It was pretty intense. I played 15 shows in 21 days. I wish I had crazy tour tales to tell you, but in reality i didn’t do anything else than travelling, sleeping and DJing. And lots of Canadian bacon in between.

Are you now tour-fit for your Australian voyage? Oh hell yeah. I’m equipped with lots of awesome music that I did just for the tour; can’t wait to finally get over there.

Your Brisbane stopover is at Blah Blah Blah with the Adicts crew alongside mates Stanton Warriors... looking forward to the boutique festival? The whole Blah Blah Blah gang is like family to me. It’s definitely one of my personal highlights! Not to mention the epic line-up.

When you're on the road... are you always hunting for new sounds/ acts? Yes, of course. It’s more important than ever to stay fresh and up-to-date with what’s going on. Like I mentioned above, there are so many people doing breakbeat outside of our scene, which makes it even more exciting to go though new music and discover unheard things.

Do you have a standout Brisbane memory from previous tours? My agent is based in Brisbane. So I spend most of my off days there. It’s my Australian home. There’s a gazillion awesome memories that come to my mind when I think of your awesome city. The food is pretty damn amazing as well.

Australian audiences.... is it a love/ love relationship? I love everything about Australia and the Australians. Playing for you guys is always special. You sure know how to party.

You're first clubbing experience was being smuggled into a club aged 15... wild times? I wish I could remember it :)

After the success you've enjoyed with ‘LGFU’ (loved the film clip btw), where are you at with new productions? Thank you :) I have my next two singles ready. ‘Oh Girl’, which is a collaboration with my friends the Funkanomics and has been signed to Punks Records (Stanton Warriors label). The one after that will be a collaboration with Sangers & Ra and Stav from the band Bluejuice.

Marten Horger in 2014... is it more of the same? Or do you have other plans in the works? I think it’s time for some groovy music again. After years of everyone trying to make the biggest banger ever I like the idea of trying to write some cooler stuff again. The new single ‘Oh Girl’ is one of those.

Stamina Agency... tell us a bit about the artist agency? When I started being interested in music I wondered why all the amazing acts that I loved didn’t come to Germany. So I started trying to get gigs for them so I could see them play. Fast forward, ten years later — it all turned into a booking and artist management agency where I have my partner and manager, Norb, working full-time at the office while I went into making music full-time.

Marten Horger joins Stanton Warriors, Deekline, Janette Slack, Mightyfools and a host of others at Blah Blah Blah Block Party in the carpark behind Oh Hello, Brisbane, Saturday December 28.

Marten also has the following Australian dates:

Dec 26 — Breakfast (Perth)
Dec 31 - Empire (Brisbane)
Jan 4 — Chinese Laundry (Sydney)
Jan 11 — Clubhouse (Canberra)
Jan 12 — Ghyde To Summer Boat (Perth)
