Man Overboard: The Story So Far

The Story So Far
National Music Editor, based in Brisbane, Australia.
'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

Celebrated Californian punkers The Story So Far have joined forces with New Jersey's Man Overboard to blaze trails across Australia... but not before a lakeside holiday in Switzerland, as TSSF's Will Levy informs us.

How did the European tour treat the band?
We’ve had a great time eating things we can’t pronounce properly. Shows have been well fun and we’ve had some really hot weather and some really wet weather. A few days at a lake in Switzerland were some highlights.

The 'Suppy Australia' tour; have you guys been doing any extra training for the Aussie climate?
We’ve got our rain coats and sweaters for the 'winter' you’re having right now.

You're on Australian roads with New Jersey's Man Overboard; have you guys spent time in the past touring together?
The two of us have done many tours together, probably about five since 2012, so we’re really good friends and it was a no brainer to join together and do some more shows.

Life on the road for The Story So Far… do you guys do the typical/ normal stuff associated with band travel?
We watch a lot of movies together, read a lot of books, and relax. If there are sites to see, then we will go... but usually we’re pretty laidback and hanging.

There have been a number of sold out shows; that must be exciting be on the other side of the world and people are buying tickets to your shows?
Yeah, it’s pretty incredible given it’s our third time to Australia. We’re pretty excited to be back and have some crowded shows!

The tour features a number of all-ages shows; how important is playing/ making yourself available to your younger fans?
It’s very important. We don’t usually set out to play restricted age shows since a lot of our fans are fairly young.

Have you heard much about the local support for the Suppy tour, Sydney's Relentless?
I heard that the singer picks his nose and smells like rotten eggs.

What has been the nastiest injury any band member has suffered on stage/ touring?
Ryan, our drummer, recently had hip surgery from years of wear and tear. He’s back with us again and stoked he can play [better] than before.

Have you ever seen a kangaroo/ koala before? Do you have intentions to get up-close with our local fauna?
Yes, we’ve seen the kangaroos and koalas. No, it’s a rip off to pay to hold a koala and it’s pretty mean, they just wanna sleep all day and not be held by dumb-ass people. So we’ll skip the zoo this time and probably go swimming or something.

The band released a new album back in May; happy with the results/ fan reactions?
We have zero complaints about the reception we’ve received thus far.

Next recording for the band… plans for another studio album?
No plans, we just released an album this year.

Life in your home town Walnut Creek, California… is it a sleepy hollow or an active area for bands?
Walnut Creek is typical, suburbia America with it’s own, local venue and local sandwich shop. It’s got a lot of bands in the area; it’s cool!
