Hang around at the intersection of hip hop, glitch, dub and trap, and you will inevitably find yourself in the company of German-based producer Mad Zach.
Combining these sonic influences, Mad Zach has established a style distinctly his own – one that is dark and heavy, with an almost futuristic quality.Onstage, Zach’s live sets fuse the elements of controllerism, finger drumming, and DJing into one.
Ahead of his appearance at Earth Frequency Festival (SE QLD) as well as shows in Sydney and Melbourne next month, Mad Zach takes us into his world and shares with us about life, music and his plans for the 15th anniversary of the festival.
Have you been happy with the response to the 'No Past Lives' EP?
Yes.
You're from San Francisco, but based in Berlin; why choose Berlin as a base of operations?
It's a great city to live in for the freedom of lifestyle. I don't feel there's as much pressure and stress as other cities, although to be fair that depends on a lot of other factors too.
How do the music cultures of the two cities compare/ contrast?
They are very different, especially when it comes to the club culture and the way people interact with the music.
Berlin has a much stronger club scene, and the electronic events are often less of a concert and more of a vibe. I'm not actually sure what SF is like these days.
Let's spend a night clubbing in Berlin and a night clubbing in San Fran; as our tour guide, where would you take us for the best music each city has to offer?
Well to be honest I'm not a huge clubber. I go sometimes in Berlin, but hardly ever in SF. Lately it has been so crowded everywhere in Berlin that it can be annoying to go out unless you have guest list somewhere.
The most obscure instrument or piece of equipment in your studio?
I have 12 different ancient reed flutes from around eastern Europe, The Middle East, and India.
You also teach audio production masterclasses – what are some common mistakes people make when they start learning the craft?
I'm not sure there's a common mistake really, other than lack of patience. But the main thing is to try to express yourself; if you do that, it’s a success. The best thing is to keep learning all the time and keep putting the time in.
Are you ready for a real Aussie dance party when you get here for Earth Frequency Festival in February?
I certainly hope so.
It's the 15th anniversary of EFF – any special plans to help them celebrate?
I will be assisting in the celebration by providing my beats and a positive attitude.
Will you have some time to explore Australia while you're here?
Yes, here and there. I would like to enjoy some nice weather and meet cool people.
What else do you have planned for 2020?
I plan to make music and continue touring.
