One of the highlights of BIGSOUND 2023, WA's Joan & The Giants continue to ride a massive wave of success into the new year.
After supporting Eskimo Joe and also walking away with three awards at WA Music Awards including Best Single (having received seven nominations) in the latter part of 2023, the alternative rock group fronted by powerhouse vocalist Grace Newton-Wordsworth have caught the attention of global popstar P!NK.The Perth band, who have released a string of singles the last two years, including 'Sleep Alone', 'The Weekend', 'Beg' and 'Cool Kid', chiselling out their own niche in the indie scene, will join Tones & I when they open P!NK's two Perth stadium concerts at Optus Stadium in early March.
"This is really the most exciting opportunity we've ever had in our lives – it's quite literally something we've dreamt of since we were kids," Grace says.
"I had a picture of a stadium show on my vision board when Aaron (guitarist) and I were studying songwriting together at Leederville TAFE eight years ago, just after I moved up to Perth from my parents farm down south and Aaron moved to Perth after being home for a while in his remote community up north.
"It's incredible to think that those two, little country kids learning about music, are about to play two stadium shows.
"We've been working so hard, and throwing all of our time and money into recording and touring our songs since 2019, when we started Joan & The Giants with Riley and Liam.
"As an independent band, it's sometimes a very overwhelming and difficult career to choose, but I am just so glad we kept pursuing this dream.
"We all absolutely adore P!NK's music, and we just can't thank PINK and her team enough for having us open. We feel very, very overwhelmingly excited."
Today also marks the release of Joan & The Giants' newest single, 'Good Time', a track that steers towards more buoyant-flavoured alt-pop and sees Grace embracing a new side to her creativity. "'Good Time' is about being madly in love and letting go of control," Grace says.
"This indie guitar-soaked summer song is a sexy ride, and it's the first time I've let myself get sexy and feel sexy in a song. I just love the way it makes me feel, and I hope it brings some good times to people."
