Gold Coast synthpop duo, Super Massive will showcase their new single 'Invertebrate' with a couple of local shows this week.
The creative co-writing partnership of ex-Machine Gun Fellatio drummer/ composer/ producer Glenn Abbott and singer-songwriter, dancer Malina Hamilton-Smith, Super Massive join Brisbane synthpop rockers My Fiction at Black Bear Lodge (Brisbane) on Thursday, before that duo join Machine Club for a triple treat of synthpop at Mo's Desert Clubhouse (Gold Coast).Recorded completely at home, 'Invertebrate' is a dark, funky pop/ rock song written about an experience of being trolled by an online hater.
"Someone left a bunch of vile personal attacks in comments on some of our YouTube videos," Hamilton-Smith explains.
"We weren't sure who it was although we had our suspicions of who it might be. Then, amusingly, the troll slipped up and used his real account sign-in/ persona (instead of his troll persona) in the middle of a string of abusive comments and accidentally revealed his true identity, confirming what we'd suspected all along."
Musically, 'Invertebrate' was influenced by a blend of Depeche Mode and Scissor Sisters.
"It's got a swampy, dark, alternative electro-rock vibe in the verses that gives way to an upbeat, piano-driven pop chorus closer to something the Scissor Sisters might do."
