Florence + The Machine: Live Review Melbourne

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Dressed in a black, flowing gown with gold epaulettes, and coupled with a voice that commanded sheer power, Florence Welch made her ethereal presence felt.

“Did anyone see Nicky Minaj in Melbourne? I love her!” Florence Welch gushed on stage in Melbourne. It is hard to imagine fans gathered at Rod Laver Arena, who admired her indie-influenced musical style, to share that same sentiment.

The set-up for Florence + The Machine's gig was extravagant to say the least, including a grand metallic gold and black harp, and glass panels on stage that resembled icicle formations, projecting kaleidoscopic video images that lent to the mood of the gig.

Welch proceeded to open the show with the anthem 'Only If For A Night', the first song off the band's latest album, Ceremonials. She was truly a sight to behold, a crimson-haired enigma who possessed the grace of a ballerina as she danced around the stage during her set.

The audience were captivated by the resonance of her powerful voice as she belted out hits such as 'What The Water Gave Me', 'Dogs Days Are Over' and 'Spectrum'.

Later on, Welch had the entire audience up on their feet with 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)'. “I like your headbands and your outfits!' she exclaimed to a group of young teenage girls who were squealing excitedly at her.

As the band came out again for the encore, she ended the night on a spectacular note with 'Never Let Me Go' and 'No Light, No Light'. The audience dispersed from the arena, seemingly reluctant to ever let her go.
