With a new EP due in February, indie-folk trio Little Quirks find themselves in something of a creative boom.
“We've got lots of new music coming out actually, so we're very excited because it's the most we've had before,” guitarist and vocalist Abbey Toole says.
On the verge of releasing what will be their third EP, Abbey says record number four won't be that far behind. “We've got a new EP coming out very soon, which will feature 'I Told You So and our other single 'Crumbled', so we're really excited about that. Then a little bit later in the year we've got another one coming out, so that's very exciting too.
“We're definitely going down the folk genre and we’re trying to do something different. I think all of our influences are really coming out in this new music, so it's looking really good.”
It's a prodigious effort for the three-woman band made up of sisters Abbey and Mia Toole (drummer), and their cousin Jaymi Toole on mandolin, with the chemistry of the trio solidifying them as a sisterhood. “We've always been like that,” Abbey says.
“Jaymi definitely feels like our sister. We've always been super-close since we were little and it's so easy; it's so much fun doing it as the three of us, we have the best time.”
Between the three of them, Little Quirks create lush, three-part vocal harmonies that give their music a trademark edge. “I think our harmonies are very different,” Abbey says.
“We've always loved doing harmonies, we'd make up songs all the time to do the harmonies. We add them in as much as we can.”
More impressive than releasing two records of new, original material in a matter of months is the fact of their youth. Abbey, essentially the middle-child of the crew, only finished high school last year, while youngest Mia will be starting grade ten this year.
While most school-leavers are trying to figure out exactly what to do with their lives, Abbey says she is set on following her musical pathway.
With a slew of new songs ready to go, National Folk Festival audiences are in for a treat when Little Quirks play the premier event in April. “During the National Folk Festival we will be releasing some new songs and then our EP will come out shortly before that, so it will be all very new, exciting things for us as well,” Abbey says.
“We're so excited, even with the venue because our fathers played there when they were younger and they were so excited when they got the message we'll be playing there.”
Along with Little Quirks supporting The Preatures, playing their own headline tour and a number of festivals, Abbey has high hopes for the year ahead. “I'm hoping our audience will grow, I hope we keep releasing new music and we get good responses,” she says.
“I'm hoping that we just slowly keep going up and hopefully something great will keep coming out of this. We're already so lucky with how it's gone so far, we hope to keep touring, let out some new videos and music. It's going to be a really good year.”
