Lior @ Brisbane Powerhouse Review

It was a timely stroll down memory lane with Lior.

For diehard fans of bands and singer-songwriters, it’s often a distant dream to hear one of your favourite albums live from start to finish. Luckily for Brisbane’s Lior lovers, this dream came true at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Saturday.

Testament to the broad appeal of Lior’s music ten years on from the release of his debut album, ‘Autumn Flow’, the demographic that piled into the Powerhouse was as diverse as Lior’s back catalogue.

As the empty seats slowly disappeared, a charming Lior entered and immediately declared his innocence during the turbulent ride taken to write and record ‘Autumn Flow'. He then kicked-off the Brisbane leg with the critically acclaimed LP’s opening track ‘This Old Love’, effortlessly followed in track order like listening to the record on your back veranda with beer in hand.

This was exactly the vibe throughout the unblemished set; backed by his brilliant band, Lior weaved witty humour throughout between the expected goodness our ears received through the soothing indie-folk he’s known for.

From the alluring falsettos in ‘Daniel’, the well-received title track ‘Autumn Flow’, the bluesy, bass-driven funk of ‘Superficial’, to the upbeat strings and riffs in ‘Sitting With A Stranger’ and ‘Stuck In A War’, Lior took the engaged onlookers back to the days when the album was a regular disc played on road trips.

Fellow singer-songwriter Domini Forster was also a welcome addition to Lior’s band, providing a peaceful contrast in backing vocals after she provided the opening set for the night with her ukulele-driven dreamy tracks.

Following the journey through ‘Autumn Flow', Lior rattled through a few favourites from his later releases: ‘Corner Of An Endless Road’, ‘Tumbling Into The Dawn’ and ‘Scattered Reflections’. ‘My Grandfather’ provided a heart-choking life story with gripping lyricism and expert delivery, while ‘Satisfied Mind’ took the crown as the encore crowd favourite.

As the band harmoniously wound things down, it was safe to say that Lior once again delivered on all fronts, rounded out with deserved, collective applause after a vocally flawless voyage.
