Lime Cordiale Talk Tour Dates, ‘Money’ And A New Album

Lime Cordiale are close to finishing their second studio album.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

In between tour dates promoting their new single 'Money', Lime Cordiale are heading into the studio to finish up their upcoming second album.

After the release of 'Money' at the start of February, the duo have already played shows in Melbourne and Sydney for their first stint of the tour, before jetting off to New Zealand.

“We went down to Melbourne and had a great run down there, then did a Sydney show on the northern beaches where we're from.

“We thought it was going to be a like a 'home-town show', where we were just going back home, but... there were people from all around Sydney, which was great,” Oli Leimbach, one half of the brother duo, says.

“We also had a great ten days in New Zealand, which we are still recovering from. The enthusiasm from people in New Zealand that like Australian music is just crazy. In terms of vibe on stage, it feels really great. Everyone is into it from the get-go. It's pretty beautiful over there, so it always feels like a holiday.”

In the middle of touring their newest hit, 'Money' was Triple J's number one most played song with its '70s-esque groove and catchy chorus. Oli says the track is about how money plays a big role in society and how it can be the source of more issues than solutions.

Reflecting on teenage years when money doesn't play as significant role, as you leave high school and get older Oli mentions how money can effect relationships, friendships and social status. “The minute you get out of high school [the pressures of money are] just more and more and more.

“That's why no one likes going to their five and ten year school reunions. Some people are successful and are like 'Aw yeah mate, I'm doing this and that' and you're like 'Oh. Yeah, I'm still in a sharehouse, scraping through on rice and soy sauce'.”

The idea of social status and wealth is showcased via the music video for 'Money', with brothers Oli and Louis playing roles of maintenance employees as well as a wealthy couple. As the video unravels, wealth is flaunted and struggles are met through the characters, Bradley and Veronica, that they play.

“We had a bunch of actors, and we were going to be the cleaners that come in and see this well-off family. But in the end it was us just doing it ourselves. It's also more reflective of these two cleaners looking in at this couple that could be themselves or different versions of themselves. But it was also just a lot of fun.

“It was pretty obvious that [Louis] was going to make a better looking woman, and I'm a bit more of a dad – I'm a bit of an old man,” Oli adds.

The duo are hopeful of completing their new album by the end of March. “The whole album, from 'Dirty Cheap' to 'Money' and other songs we have written that'll be on the album, there's a pretty strong theme of these pressures society puts on you and just trying to break out of that mould and not to go with that set plan that everyone expects of you. You can say no, and you can do your own thing.

“At the end of the day we're trying to hit some issues, but we're also trying to do something that people can listen to and just have fun.”

The band have also announced (20 March) the return of their annual music festival The Squeeze in June, with shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. It features Lime Cordiale plus Tyne James Organ, The Lulu Raes, Heaps Good Friends and Asha Jeffries plus comedian Demi Lardner.
