Returning to the Australian stage after a four-year hiatus, Liars' sole member Angus Andrew will be performing a number of select east-coast Australian shows (including Yours & Owls Festival) after the release last month of the group's first original movie soundtrack, '1/1'.
Originally conceived in New York, Liars have operated within cities such as Brooklyn, Berlin and Los Angeles. Now returning back to his roots, Angus is working from remote Australia and is eager to be bringing an energetic show to his Aussie fans.
“I haven’t played in Australia for [a while now]. I just got back from doing a tour of China which was weird. It will be good to get back on the stage in Australia, which is always exciting,” Angus says.
“I’m sure I’m going to see a lot of interesting things at Yours and Owls, which I am excited for because I don’t get out that much and it will be good to see some bands.
“I’m playing with two guys I haven’t played with before who are Australian. I’m really excited to see what happens when I play with them. There’s [also] some cool bands that we are playing with that I like. It’s going to be fun. I’m looking to play at least one song from each [Liars] record, so there’s a few old ones. [It’s] always fun when I can bring them back to life.”
Liars released '1/1' mid-July, and the soundtrack accompanies Jeremy Phillips' directorial debut. “The director got in touch through some people. I met him in LA. He said he had written the movie while listening to Liars.
“It’s one of those weird things. Because it’s a movie, it takes five times as long for that stuff to actually come out. I think the music was made three or four years ago. Normally the turnaround time on an album is much less.
“It’s a trip to hear something from awhile back come out now. It’s kind of nice. It’s a different quality of sound that I’m working with at the moment because I kind of decided to degrade the sound. It’s interesting to hear this really crisp music that I made a few years ago.”
Compared to the musician’s previous albums, Angus describes ‘1/1’ to be a heavily instrumental release.
“That’s a really fun thing to do when you mostly write songs, because it’s so liberating to be able to make music that doesn’t have vocals. I’ve never done a soundtrack before, so it’s interesting to hear that music all together as an album.”
The '1/1' soundtrack is available now.
