Lester The Fierce: Love And Loss

Anita Lester: Lester The Fierce
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Lester The Fierce is a combination of Anita Lester and her alter ego, imagined as a children’s book hero.

Recently, Lester allowed a camera team to invade her studio to create a documentary about the creation of her latest EP.

“It was weird; usually when you record it's quite private and intimate,” Anita says. “You're putting your thoughts and emotions onto tracks, so it was a little confronting at first to have cameras around you. However, it was good to look back at a time that is usually a little fuzzy and see it in an extremely clear way.”

The self-titled EP concentrates on Lester's love of folk, rock and lyrical storytelling, touching on love, sex, death and the ever-changing Melbourne sky. The EP features her new single ‘January’, which a brand new music video has been released for.

Lester wrote, directed and edited the music video herself. However, it didn’t all go to plan. “It wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. I study film at university and the original film clip took away from the lyrics. So I decided I would make my own clip that was more psychedelic so the audience was less focused on the story of the video and would become more focused on the lyrics of the song.”

Being a solo musician who wants to have a full sound to her music Anita managed to have no trouble finding like minded musicians to support her when she needed. “The musicians I have found are usually from the Victorian College of Arts, which means they are all extremely talented players who have worked with each other in the past.”

Although Lester the Fierce has a fairly big sound, Anita does plan on stripping things back for her upcoming album. She wouldn’t give too much away, but assures us that fans will not be disappointed.
