Soaked in dreamy electronic pop, Australian brother-sister duo Lastlings – who recently played Coachella – are emerging as one of the country’s preeminent, live electronic acts.
The high-spirited Gold Coast duo of Josh and Amy Dowdle are part of a select list of Australians who’ve had the privilege of taking to the stage at Coachella - a performance that arrived prior to them releasing their debut album.
Lastlings are still human and made sure they were able to catch Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber after their monumental Coachella debut.
With brand new single ‘I’ve Got You’ released last month, Lastlings are making the world their oyster by taking you on a blissful journey into the duo’s creative mindset. “We closed our [Coachella] set with ‘I’ve Got You’,” Josh says. “It was pretty cool. A lot of fans were already singing the lyrics back which is crazy because it had only come out two or three days prior; it was pretty sweet.”
The new single is another step forward into a newly explored, dance-driven, sonic space, boasting melodic-pop vocals and a mature electronica pallet.
In their own words, the track is about “overcoming that subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place. The song reflects on caring for our loved ones, talking to them, and making sure that they are okay.”
Signed to RÜFÜS DU SOL’s Rose Avenue Records, ‘I’ve Got You’ follows their single ‘Deja Vu’ released late last year and is the second cut from their forthcoming debut LP.
RÜFÜS are major fans of the young duo, who joined RÜFÜS on their 2017 'Full Bloom' tour. Lastlings have spent April touring the US as RÜFÜS' support act. “Taste is such a funny thing; when you find people who share your love of particular music, it bonds you instantly,” RÜFÜS says about Lastlings.
“You don’t need anything else in common. We had that moment when we met Amy and Josh. They played us some of their new music they’d been writing, and we were in. At that point we didn’t even have a label set up, we just knew we wanted to be a part of what they were working on and try to share the feeling their music evokes in us with as many people as possible.”
Rose Avenue Records philosophy centres around building a family atmosphere (Lastlings wrote and recorded the first formations of their debut record at RÜFÜS' house in Venice) with its roster – that also includes Cassian, who has provided additional production and mixing of Lastlings' songs.
“We did a regional tour around Australia with [RÜFÜS] two years ago,” begins Josh, “and that was the first time we met them, but our managers were good friends before that. [The connection has] been in the works for a while.
“It’s been really cool. It’s kind of like a little family now and everyone’s really lovely,” Amy adds.
The music industry sees a swag of new acts arrive every year, with most disappearing from view pretty quickly. But the sibling duo hold an edge with family as their nucleus – in a similar manner like Haim, Broods and Angus & Julia Stone.
“We do fight a lot, but it's good fighting I guess,” Amy says. “We’re always looking after each other. We kind of owe it to each other to always do our best and not quit on one another.”
Lastlings are also on the Splendour In The Grass bill, and are super excited to play the Byron Bay classic. “My first festival was Splendour when I was 16 or 17,” Josh says, “and I’ve basically been every year, and I was always like 'goddamn, I’d love to be up there one day.'”
