Pop-rock band LANY only released their self-titled debut album in July last year and already they're back in Australia for their third, headline tour.
LANY were last here for Splendour In The Grass and the upcoming tour will have them expand their territory once more, with their first show ever in Brisbane.
Vocalist Paul Klein says Australia has become a point of interest for the band. “Australia's been amazing to us and it's an important market to us,” Paul says.
“We're really excited to come back, and play Brisbane for the first time and we've pushed really hard to make sure these shows are all-ages because in the past it's been a bit of a struggle. This will be our third show in Sydney and Melbourne and our first one in Brisbane.”
As support for LANY bellows worldwide, Paul says their fans are central to much of the decision making when it comes to producing music, the most prominent example being the debut album.
“We've built this thing from the ground up and we have this fan base that is real and has been keyed in from the beginning, and I think we really made the album with them in mind,” he says.
“Because we could have easily taken the most popular tracks from our EPs and put them on the debut then added a couple of new songs and called it a day, but it was important to us that we kept feeding the fan base new content and new material, and give them a really legitimate album to dive into, and a world to live in and explore.”
The latest release from the band is the single 'Super Far', a track that came together after an unexpected collaboration between Paul and producer Ryan Tedder, who has worked with artists such as Adele, Beyonce and U2.
“[The band] had written all the songs for the album, just the three of us really, and we made the entire album in the kitchen of our house,” Paul explains.
“I had previously met Ryan about a year and a half before and he was really eager to write a song together. I had never done something like that really – I'm not to familiar with it – but once we had all the songs written for the album, I felt more comfortable walking into the room with someone like him.”
Before the tour gets to Australia, Paul is hopeful LANY can release another two new tracks, while the last half of the year has been dedicated to recording their next full-length album.
“I spent all of January and I will spend the rest of February and a little bit of March just committing myself to writing the best songs possible and also trying a bunch of new stuff,” he says.
“There are some that really stand out and there are others that are okay, that's part of the process but I think we will definitely release new material... and we'll continue to trickle out material throughout the year.
"Then we've set aside September through December to bunker down and make album two.”
