With 15 years experience in the industry, I reckon I've heard a lot of local singers. From your busker on the corner to the next, big thing being peddled by one of the major labels.
What I do know is West End identity (and frontman for the musical madness that is Laneous & The Family Yah) Lachlan Mitchell has the best set of vocal pipes my eardrums have encountered in Brisbane. Drop mic. Really.
Which is why his appearance at the Brisbane Jazz Club later this month is a real coup for the Kangaroo Point venue. Lachlan will be teaming with fellow Brisbanite Hannah Macklin (you may know here as MKO Sun) for what is being termed a 'colourful and entertaining evening'.
The press release for the show states: 'Hannah Macklin & Lachlan Mitchell will seduce and satiate your ears, your soul & your heart.' I'm intrigued. What can we expect from the show?
I'm going to seduce someone's ears. Maybe a gentle wet willy. Maybe whisperings of sweet nothings. See what happens in the moment. Whatever happens, it will be sensual and consensual. And maybe a little messy.
The same presser states to 'prepare for a colourful and entertaining evening'. Do you guys have a confetti cannon on standby? Please!!
Whoever said that is wrong. I'm going to wear a black smock and I do not have a confetti canon.
You'll be performing songs from the American real book as well as compositions from the likes of Withers & Wonder. Will this be an upbeat evening of songs?
I have no idea what we are doing.
The group of musicians supporting you guys is impressive: Peta Wilson (piano), Stu Barry (double bass) and Myka Wallace (drums). They must make your task a breeze, right?
As long as they don't look me directly in the eye, as my contract stipulates, I'm sure it'll be fine.
You're playing at the Brisbane Jazz Club; it's a beautiful venue and somewhat unknown to the youth of the city. With it's beautiful backdrop, it must be a pleasure to play?
Not during the flood.
Jazz has a stigma attached to it by the mainstream and certainly a younger audience. For mind some of the best music I've heard has jazz as its backbone. Band Of Skulls is just one example. What do you love about the genre?
I like that it has chords and melody and rhythm. I like a music that has that stuff.
Favourite jazz artist?
Roland Kirk. So much soul and vibe and saxes.
Outside of this show, what do you have happening with your other projects?
I'm living in Melbourne doing different stuff. Lots of stuff with my project Uncomfortable Science.
And 2017… have you looked that far ahead?
No, but I assume it'll be very similar to this year. Trying to make music while being distracted by some girl that doesn't know how to love.
Hannah Macklin & Lachlan Mitchell perform at the Brisbane Jazz Club on 29 October.
