DJ and host of triple j's House Party, KLP aka Kristy Lee Peters is getting ready for her last run of live shows for 2018 and putting the final touches on new music before welcoming a new collaborator into the world.
Due to have her first child in March, Kristy says she'll be taking a short break from writing and performing to focus on being a mother. “I'm just so excited because obviously when I have the baby I'll be taking a mini-break,” Kristy says.
“So all these shows I'm going to go as hard as I can and give it everything I've got because I know that wherever I'm playing I may not be back there for a tiny bit longer than usual. I definitely will be back, but I'll be taking a bit of a break. When I play these gigs I'm going to go in and give it everything.”
Kristy will be wrapping up the tour cycle for her recent single 'Venus x Mars', which she's been taking around the country since September. “It was a little bit of a different experience for me because I'm pregnant,” she says of the single tour.
“I knew I was pregnant when I started those shows but it's been really fun going and playing in the clubs, and everybody has just been so supportive. I've been trying my hardest to stay as fit as I can so I have lots of energy still; it's been a really fun process.
“It's been really fun being able to share that with everyone. It hasn't really stopped me from doing anything; I'm still playing in the clubs, I'm still dancing up a storm,” she laughs. “I feel like I almost have more energy right now, which is awesome because I've got a few more gigs coming up, so I want to keep match-fit.”
With the end of the tour cycle nearing for 'Venus x Mars', there's plenty of new music from KLP for fans to look forward to she says.
“To be honest I've had so much going on post-'Venus x Mars' that I've been focussing on the future. I'm working on getting a lot of new music under my belt. I recently spent a week with 15 amazing artists in Newcastle writing music for a songwriting camp that I put on, so I feel like by the time I put out a song I'm straight away thinking about what's next to come.
“I think there will be releases more at the start of next year, so I'm working on finishing them off. When you write music there's such a long turnaround between writing music and putting it out; it's so much shorter than it used to be but it's still not immediate, so I'm always looking to the future.”
Though motherhood beckons, KLP isn't retiring from the deck or headphones anytime soon and says her upcoming shows barely constitute a teary farewell. “It's not even goodbye,” she says. “Just like a slight delay then I'll be back, and I'll bring a sidekick so it'll be double the fun.”
