Kings Within are a newly-formed alternative rock band based in Adelaide who have already made an impact on the local scene.
The band has come together from the remains of two defunct Adelaide hardcore and melodic-hardcore bands, At Fate's Mercy and The Broadside. “Both bands went in different directions with their members and as a result the driving members of each band got together and formed Kings Within,” vocalist Benn Cox explains.
“But rather than go in the hardcore or melodic-hardcore route we both came from, we pushed towards a more alternative rock and heavy rock sound because we felt Adelaide was lacking a bit of that.”
Mere months after their amalgamation and Kings Within have already released their debut single 'Feel The Rain', a track Benn and the band are proud to present as the first taste of what's to come from Kings Within.
“'Feel The Rain' was actually the very first song we wrote that we had a lot of trouble with because being a new band we had to figure out how to write together and what was the best method of getting things done without tripping over each other or getting into fights over it,” Benn explains.
“It ended up being our most elaborate song with a lot of different sounds and different aspects, which is what we wanted to showcase on our debut release so that people knew we weren't one track-minded and that there were a lot of different things going on. Having a product we're proud of is definitely a kick-start for setting off the band [sic].”
With their debut single out in the world, Kings Within now prepare for what will essentially be their debut as a live unit, apart from a small 'secret' show earlier in the year to test the waters as a new group.
In December and January Kings Within play a short run of shows. “Playing live again is something we're really excited for,” Benn says.
“The Jive Bar show in late December has got some great bands on it and it's a great time of year when everyone is kicking off and enjoying some holidays and start to relax a little bit. So we really see that show as being a good night out... there's some great music and musicians involved. Then we'll take a bit of a break over Christmas as everyone likes to do then head to Melbourne.
“What people can expect from us is professionalism; we've been doing it for a little while through our previous outlets but at the same time, bringing everyone together and playing live is something exciting and that's how we feel the shows are going to be.”
In the New Year, Benn says he and the band will be trying to maintain their momentum by releasing some new music they've been working on and building on what has already been an exciting period for the new band. “The new song has been so well-received and people want some more, so we're going to be recording up to and between the shows,” he says.
“Hopefully after Melbourne, once we play and land some new fans and people are on the hook, we can reel them in when we release some new tracks. Early 2018 is going to be the time to keep your ears and eyes open for new songs.”
