North Queensland group King Social have been nominated in two categories (Indigenous and Soul/ Funk/ R&B) at this month's Queensland Music Awards (QMAs).
The group originally formed in 2013 and were first nominated for the QMAs in 2015. The band's lead vocalist and guitarist, Angus Milne is excited about their latest nominations.
“We are really excited. We are a bit surprised. We didn’t even realised we registered,” he says before explaining that King Social's PR person registered the band. “It was pretty exciting to get the news sort out of the blue.
“In a weird way it sort of legitimises it. We put in a lot of effort, a lot of money, a lot of time and a lot of passion.”
Since their first QMA nomination, Angus believes the group have progressed a lot. “We've come along way since then I think. As a band we have really developed. I call it the soul of the band.”
When King Social first began, Angus was the main songwriter. “I would write most of the music and most of the songs. [But] most of the songs now are written by King Social as a team. So when there's five of us in the band and we all write together, it's good fun.”
Angus says the QMAs have opened up a few doors for the group. “It's pushed us up a bit and given us a lot more opportunities with music festivals, especially around Queensland and down south [southern states].”
King Social have an array of performances in the near future scattered around Australia. “Really looking forward to it,” beams Angus. “We've just done a week [in] Cairns and Julia Creek and that was just ridiculous. It was so fun.
“We are really looking forward to going back out to Longreach and then we are going down to Byron Bay and Port Macquarie. We have a bunch-more dates coming up.”
Angus emphasises that the band has a passion for getting on stage and performing live. “For me and the boys, that's the pay-off for us. If you came to see a party, we're there to get the party started.”
Though the stage is only part of the equation for the band. “Being in the studio is awesome fun too,” admits Angus.
“I prefer being on stage performing, but everyone loves being in the studio. It's kind of like a little holiday. A lot of the lads don’t really like being away from home. So being on the road probably doesn’t attract them so much, but being on stage – that's the part everyone loves.
“We love having a good party, but we love writing our songs so if you actually sat down and listened to the songs you'd get a bit of meaning out of them as well.”
