Having returned from his Canadian tour, Kim Churchill is soaking up the rays before taking his talents across Australia.
To promote his latest single, 'Window To The Sky', Australia's own Kim Churchill has returned to home soil for a national tour. However, he's been taking the time to enjoy the country's renowned beaches and weather before kicking off. “I've been in the sun the last couple of days at Byron Bay,” says the 23-year-old. “It's amazing and nice and warm. It's awesome to be back.
“When I'm deep in these tours in other countries, I really start to miss that whole lifestyle and the ability to go for a swim or surf. The more I travel the more I come back here and realise how amazingly beautiful it is and how lucky I am to be from here.”
However, his rest and relaxation will soon take a backseat when he takes his single across the whole country. In particular, Churchill is very excited to get back to Western Australia, where he plans to hire a camper van and do things “au naturel” during his time in the state.
'Window To The Sky', which is already seeing airplay in Australia, has been noted to be more upbeat and accessible that his previous work, something Churchill chalks up to simply doing what he felt like. “More than anything, I stopped trying so hard to be something,” he explains. “The music, I'd say, is a more natural representation of me and how I feel than ever before.”
This ideology of staying true to himself was also integral to the recording of Churchill's upcoming fourth studio album, 'Silence / Win'. “We recorded the songs as live performances in a very small town in northwestern Vancouver. Basically me and my guitar in front of a mic. We got out that feeling and emotion and did exactly what I felt like.
“Reaching my early 20s, I'd reached this point in desperately wanting to be something, how I wanted to be seen and conveyed. Finally, with this album, I threw all that out the window. The fact it's deemed more accessible is an added bonus I hadn't foreseen. Every musician wants to have a level of success, when really I made it by letting go of my desire to have that success. It's an ironic but beneficial circumstance.”
