Cue the nostalgia feels Australia 'cause beloved early 2000s rockers Killing Heidi are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album.
The pop-rock band led by siblings Ella and Jesse Hooper will honour their 'Reflector' album with a five-date national tour – with headline concerts in Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in June – as well as releasing a special anniversary edition on vinyl and CD (20 June), complete with demos and rarities. At the time, 'Reflector' was the fastest-selling Australian album ever going 4x platinum, landing at #1. With iconic hits 'Weir' and 'Mascara', the record fused the energy of grunge to the new electronic frontier.
Killing Heidi would go on to blitz the ARIAs, dominate the Hottest 100, and win APRA Songwriters of the Year. "It's an unlikely success story, for sure," Ella says. "Sonically, it was so adventurous, we were so young, and it was such a wild-looking band for the time, but the songs connected because they’re authentic teen stories.
"I think that's the hook that's made it last. Our shows give people the chance to remember who they were during that time and reconnect with those feelings. For a lot of people, 'Reflector' is hardwired to some of their greatest memories – the soundtrack to leaving school, their first kiss, their first car."
Adds Jesse: "The whole thing from a creative perspective was super exciting. We were absorbing other people's expertise and thriving on being the kids in the room with all these great, talented adults. It was a pretty wild entry into the music industry."
After a welcome reception at recent festivals, Killing Heidi are back, sharper, stronger and ready to deliver 'Reflector' in full, start to finish. "The driving force now," Ella says, "is to give people the best Killing Heidi show they may not have got in the early 2000s.
"We're better players now; we've got a killer band covering all those myriad keys and vocal parts, finally. It's insane fun."
Joining the tour will be WA singer-songwriter Siobhan Cotchin and Melbourne singer-songwriter Hassall (except Perth).
Tickets on sale from 9am (local time) on 27 March.
