Australian comedy legend, Kevin Bloody Wilson is taking his ‘Almost Awesome’ show around Queensland, hitting up larger cities and country towns.
Playing his classics such as ‘Living Next Door To Alan’, ‘Hey Santa Claus’ and ‘D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F.’ the comedian discusses the show. “I don’t sit down and write a show and then work that show every night.
“I have a core of songs, and then [I just] freewheel and see where it takes [me]. Generally you end up in a pretty comfortable and happy place.”
The show will visit lesser known areas such as Buderim, Gympie and Maryborough. “Australia’s the only place where we do towns like that. I’m from the outback and I know what it means to get good entertainment out there.”
In terms of putting a show together, Kevin has a bit of trouble in one area. “Probably the hardest job I have on all of this is to work out which songs to leave out of the show rather than which ones to put in!
“I have my phone on roam when I’m in the car and that just spits out whatever in random order. Quite often one of my songs comes up that I haven’t heard for years and I think ‘f*** that’s funny.’ It comes back as fresh and I think ‘wow that’s really good, I’m very happy with that'.”
Kevin’s songs are often parodies of existing songs or inspired by conversations he has. “I don’t write for Carnegie Hall or Sydney Opera House or even for the local pub.
“I write them for my mates and if the songs get past them they’re good enough to record. Given that half the material in the songs are from them anyway! I’m just sitting at home on a Friday night, getting pissed and stealing their material [laughs].”
Comedy is something shared with Kevin’s family. His wife, Betty, tours with him as does his daughter who serves as the opening act of his upcoming shows.
She performs as Jenny Talia From Australia and is quickly following in her father’s footsteps. “She started out as a country singer and ended up in Nashville she was so good.
“But she was getting a lot of responses from her American girlfriends backstage – she was re-gendering some of my songs and they would say ‘you should record some of that’.
“So she did, and within three months she’d outsold all three of her country albums on the one comedy one. The path was fairly well laid out by then.”
With censorship rules and people becoming offended easier than when he started, Kevin has run into some strife.
“I’m currently suspended for 30 days on Facebook but that’s not the first time, it happens at least once or twice a year for me!
“People take offence, I don’t give it, so if you’re offended stiff shit. Deep Purple; I don’t like their music so I don’t go to their concerts. But certainly, my audience see it for what it is – a bloke on stage having a better time than you are.”
Kevin is sure to touch on some more nerve-endings with upcoming new records. “I’m planning an album called 'Let Loose Live In The Vatican' so that’ll be a beauty.
“If I get away with that I’m gonna do 'Let Loose Live In Mecca' and that will definitely be my last album,” he laughs.
