Kendrick Lamar Song Dragged Into Oscar Pistorius Trial

The trial of Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius took a strange turn when Kendrick Lamar's 2013 track 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' was cited by the prosecution.

Pistorius is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14, 2013. The Olympic sprinter says he killed Steenkamp by accident, mistaking her for an intruder; the prosecution says he intentionally killed her during an argument.

As evidence of Pistorius' combative relationship with Steenkamp, the prosecution produced WhatsApp messages which detailed an argument Pistorius and Steenkamp had about Pistorius playing Kendrick Lamar's 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe' in his car.

A message from Steenkamp to Pistorius read: "I'm scared of you sometimes and how u snap at me and of how you will react to me. You make me happy 90% of the time and I think we are amazing together but I am not some other bitch you may know trying to kill your vibe."

Pistorius replied: "I was upset that you just left me after we got food to go talk to a guy and I was standing right behind you watching you touch his arm and ignore me. And when I spoke up you introduced me which you could've done but when I left you just kept on chatting to him when clearly I was upset. I asked Martin to put on that Kendrick Lamar album in the car and don't know it."

He also offered his review of the track: "Granted that it was a shit song but you should've just lent forward and whispered in my ear to change it seeing as I had to drive to pick up your friend."

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel asked Pistorius if the name of the song was 'Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe', but Pistorius said he couldn't remember. Nel responded that Steenkamp would have been right to take offence, but "we can't ask her".

Presumably, the prosecutor then dropped the mic.
