When Macklemore and Ryan Lewis won the Grammy for Best Rap Album earlier this week, it launched a thousand think pieces about 'White Privilege'. But it turns out the man they beat is totally cool with it.
Most observers — including Macklemore himself — thought Kendrick Lamar should have won the award, and Macklemore even sent a text message to Lamar saying as much ("It's weird and sucks that I robbed you," read the message, which Macklemore made public).
In an interview with XXL, Lamar has commented on the 'snub' and voiced his support for Macklemore: "It's well deserved; he did what he did, man. He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that's how it go."
Sure, Lamar didn't go quite as far in his defence of Macklemore as Amanda Palmer did (Palmer said the film '12 Years A Slave' reminded her of the white rapper's plight); but the message is clear.
Of course, actually caring about who wins a Grammy award is probably the least credible thing a rapper can do, so maybe we shouldn't be surprised?
