All-Maori reggae band Katchafire have been setting the world ablaze.
Formed originally as a Bob Marley tribute band over a decade ago, they have become New Zealand's premier reggae act and are heading to Brisbane in October.
How was your recent US tour?
It was epic as usual. We always love going to the States. We've had a few tours during the winter; it's great to see the country in a different season, and if we come in the winter that means we are coming back to do summer, so we get two hits of the States lol.
What were some of the highlights?
Everything; the whole tour. We played Mandalay Bay in Vegas; that was epic. Go on our website and check out the pic.
Katchafire began as a Bob Marley tribute band; what lead to it becoming a band that writes and plays original music?
It was just a natural move. We love the music so much Neva thought of doing it professionally; just thought it was gonna go as far as the garage and that's it but as things progressed so did we. It's nice to make a living off something you love.
Do the band members feel a special connection to Bob Marley or Rastafarianism?
Yes, we do feel a connection to Bob's music. It doesn't matter where you're from, his music will move you and you'll become conscious because of it.
Is the band working on a new album?
Yes we are, but touring life if busy, so it's taking a little longer then expected. We get home in October, so we can finish things then.
How is the upcoming Summer High tour different to previous tours?
This time we have a slightly different line-up of band members and we are playing more of the old stuff mixed into the sets. We have just come from Europe and bring third vibes straight to the people of Aussie [sic].
What can fans expect from the Summer High concerts?
Another root-rock-funky-reggae party. Plus we have Jordan T with us; we'll be playing some of his songs as well.
Do you think Katchafire are progressing the reggae genre, or bringing it to a new generation of listeners?
All of the above. We've alway pushed the boundaries of traditional, roots reggae from Jamaica. And because the Jamaicans have given us our own name of reggae strain called South Pacific reggae. You have California reggae, Europe reggae, Jamaican reggae and now New Zealand is apart of that global movement. I like to think we played a part in helping bring New Zealand's reggae identity to the forefront. We have been spreading NZ reggae internationally for the last ten-plus years.
You seem to find fans wherever you go; do you find reggae is a more universal type of genre that appeals to most people?
Yes, it's music that can go everywhere; music for all people. Everyone can relate to the message, that's why it easy to get fans loving your music everyday.
What are the band's plans once the tour is complete?
Home to touch base then summer tour in NZ, then next year is set to bigger and better. Can't wait to see all our fans around the world. Get at ya soon as.
