US singer-songwriter Joshua Radin embarks on his first Australian tour in almost three years this May.
Born in Cleveland to a Jewish family, Joshua released his first album ‘We Were Here’ in 2006.
Two years before that his first composition, ‘Winter’, had been introduced to ‘Scrubs’ creator Bill Lawrence by actor Zach Braff, leading to several of Joshua’s songs being used throughout the series. Joshua's music has since gone on to become a staple of film and television with songs of his having featured on shows such as 'Grey's Anatomy', 'Brothers And Sisters', 'Cougar Town', 'One Tree Hill', 'House' and more.
In a 2010 count, his music had received more than 75 film and television placements.
Joshua has released seven studio albums, his most recent being 'The Fall' last year and the first to be self-produced by the artist. “‘The Fall’ is my seventh studio album but it’s the first album I’ve produced myself, so this feels like the most honest work I’ve released in my 12-year career,” Joshua says.
Around the time of the album's release Joshua told Kelly Petryszyn in an interview with Cleveland Magazine that 'The Fall' is thematically tied together by the dissolution of previous relationships in his life. “It’s really an album about past relationships of mine,” Joshua says.
“The falling in love, the falling out of love, the trying to convince someone to take that leap when they have been burned before.
"There’s certainly ups and downs in that relationship, breaking up a couple times in between and writing songs about that. It’s really just an album about the fall of innocence.
“When it comes to my point of view in this relationship, something that seemed one way ending up being not what I thought and learning a lot from it. Learning that sometimes, in this past relationship, I wasn’t sure if I should go down drowning with her or I should try to save myself.
"In the end, I chose to save myself. Which, one could say, saved her as well. It’s too soon to know.”
If nothing else, Joshua has built a sturdy career on delivering honest and heartfelt, original music that taps into the well of human experience and floods the soul with raw emotion.
Last year also saw Joshua achieve another milestone when he opened for pop megastar Ed Sheeran at his show in Joshua's home town in Ohio.
When Joshua Radin comes to Australia in May, it is expected he'll be performing songs from 'The Fall' as well as from his extended back catalogue.
A purveyor of more thoughtful and considered folk music, Joshua told David J Criblez in an interview with Newsday (1 August, 2017) that his performances tend towards respectfully quiet affairs as opposed to raucous rock shows.
“It’s not a party show; it’s an introspective, listener show,” he says.
“We are just out there trying to make people feel.
“It’s pin-drop quiet, which is really appreciated. We are lucky that people come to listen; if there’s one person by the bar talking, people will be like ‘Shhh!’ It’s pretty flattering.”
