From the ripe old age of 15, Joel Adams has been considered a musical sensation.
Born and bred in Brisbane, Joel is widely known for his first song, 2015's 'Please Don't Go'. But since then, he has released a slew of hits.
He currently resides in Los Angeles, where he has lived for the past three years. “I get a lot of work done when I'm here and get to do my music everyday, so it's a good life,” Joel says.
This August, Joel will be opening for UK singer Tom Walker for the Australian section of his world tour.
Although the two don’t know each other, they have had contact in the past. “When I was living in London, I was recording in the same studio as him and we used to run into each other a bit in this little outdoor area.
“I remember the room that he was recording in had an open window. I don’t know the song, but someone was cutting his vocals and every three seconds you could hear this vocal. And me and some of the guys I was working with started singing it around the studio because we kept hearing it... It was kind of like a weird connection. I don’t know that he would remember that though,” Joel says.
But even as semi-strangers, Joel is pumped for the tour. “I love his music and I'll take any good excuse to get back home and get on the road and play, and go get drunk with my friends at some point,” Joel says.
A professional in the industry for eight years, Joel is an experienced performer. You would think he has his pre-show traditions down pat. He does not.
“Maybe a nervous poo? I don't know, nothing really. If I drink before I go on I think I do worse because I play everything myself, I've gotta focus. I think the best performances I've done are when you just go on and do it. The more chilled you are, the better. I think it's just a mental thing,” he says.
Joel hadn't been singing long before he got his break. “I started singing when I was about 14 years old because I was at a party with a bunch of friends and one of my mates was playing guitar and we started singing Jack Johnson, and one of my mates said 'Oh, you actually aren't terrible'.
“I started doing it for fun and then I saw these 'X-Factor' auditions on the Saturday and I decided to go because I had nothing to do that Saturday. That worked out and that's how it all started,” Joel says.
However, he started playing guitar a little younger. “I used to play 'Guitar Hero' and it got to the point where I was pretty good and I thought if I could play 'Guitar Hero' really well then maybe I can play guitar.”
When it comes to his favourite songs, Joel is mysterious. He has a new EP coming out next month that has his new personal favourite on it. “My favourite one that's out right now would probably be 'Coffee', but my real favourite isn't released yet,” Joel says.
