Joan As Police Woman Brisbane Review

Joan As Police Woman at The Hi-Fi [BNE] 24.06.2014
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Joan As Police Woman has returned with her new album ‘Classic’, and in support of the release, Joan and her band popped into Brisbane’s The Hi-Fi, serving a large helping of her tasty brand of slow-burn blues-rock.

It's been a while since I've made acquaintance with the impeccable vocals of Joan Wasser but in experiencing her live, my flame for her has been rekindled. Joan performs with the showmanship of Chrissie Hynde and the intensity of Patti Smith but with a signature all of her own.

Her vocals are as clear and affecting live as they are recorded and she is the perfect teacher to school the children on how to breathe light and dark into a tune. When Joan's words are saying “How can?” or “Why me?” her voice is projecting “I can indeed” and “Come at me". Just when you feel like she's falling into a comfortable vocal flow she changes gear and cuts the air with an intense precision.

Showing off her multi instrument talents, moving from keys, to guitar and violin, I was often left with chills running full length down my spine as she felt deeply for each instrument like a lover.

Mixing mostly new material from the album ‘Classic’, the audience were also treated to some of their original material like 'Christobel' and 'I Defy', which were well received with the crowd joining in a singalong. Also as a surprising treat the band covered Amerie’s '1 Thing' and performed their final encore song in a capella barbershop style.

Unexpected and warmly welcomed it was all over before I knew it and was left wanting with a newly swollen heart beating for Joan As Police Woman. Joan As Police Woman continues to reach deep down your throat and grip your heart strings. I dare you not to get emotional.
