Audiences will be in no doubt as to who Jill Scott is when the Grammy Award-winning, neo-soul powerhouse performs an Australian exclusive as part of Vivid LIVE.
Affectionately known as 'Jilly from Philly', the spoken-word artist will perform her influential debut album 'Who Is Jill Scott? Words And Sounds Vol. 1', celebrating its 20th anniversary at Sydney Opera House.
In Jill's second ever Australian appearance, the acclaimed poet, actor and singer-songwriter will be joined by a live band to perform the album in full along with a selection of her greatest hits over a four-night residency. Jill tells audiences to expect theatre, incredible musicianship and love, lots of love.
"In the era of Lizzo, SZA, Rihanna and Solange, Jill Scott's significance and influence as an artist continues to grow and inspire audiences across generations," Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall, says.
'Who Is Jill Scott? Words And Sounds Vol. 1' was released in 2000 and is considered one of the most refreshing takes on the R&B genre to this day, combining poetic storytelling, cosmic jazz sounds and soul-affecting ballads.
Her ability to be fierce-yet-sweet and sexual-yet-relatable through her honest lyrics and powerful voice made her a pioneer in the representation of the multi-dimensional woman, paving the way for today’s female R&B and rap artists.
Vivid Sydney is the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2020, Vivid LIVE will continue to invite uncompromising voices to the nation’s most famous stages in a contemporary music takeover that celebrates iconic and ambitious artists, emerging voices, and performances by diverse and local communities.
