JFDR & Tropical F... Storm Headline Castlemaine State Festival's Contemporary Music Programme

Tropical F... Storm have been added to the 2019 Castlemaine State Festival line-up.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Castlemaine State Festival brings a spicy and exciting mix of international and local music acts to your March table.

The contemporary music line-up announcement by the Victorian festival includes rising Icelandic star JFDR, along with Melbourne-based noise rock group Tropical F... Storm plus fellow Melburnians and jazz-funk, post disco mad-men, Mildlife.

Other band highlights include high speed, gringo-garage band Puta Madre Brothers, post-punk rocker and ARIA Award winner Mick Harvey, orchestral folk-pop performer Laura Jean, The Putbacks fronted by Indigenous singer Emma Donovan and Davo, beloved Castlemaine Devo cover band.

Jófríður Ákadóttir aka JFDR was named Artist Of The Year by Reykjavík Grapevine magazine. JFDR creates a haunting, yet magical atmosphere with her droning lyrical delivery and sweeping instrumental fills. Castlemaine State Festival will mark her Australian debut performance.

From the same mind that created The Drones, Tropical F... Storm bring psych-garage and punk blues to their live performance, which truly has to be seen to be understood. Jazzy, krautrock 'space disco' quadruplet Mildlife beam in their complex, delicate and fun sound. Sit down, indulge or find yourself accidentally dancing.

The strange and exciting Puta Madre Brothers, crafting dirty Mexican grooves delivered in their fun and insane 'Spanglish', will confuse and delight you. Mick Harvey, founding member of The Birthday Party and long-time member of The Bad Seeds, will be performing a number of Serge Gainsbourg songs with his band and string quartet.

Laura Jean, meanwhile, presents a dreamy version of pop-folk. Touring on the back of her album 'Devotion', she brings a tasteful sense of innocence and intimacy to her approachable sonic creation.

The festival also offers a range of other events from classical, theatre, cabaret and dance performances, to film screenings and visual arts.

2019 Castlemaine State Festival (Victoria) takes place 22-31 March. Tickets now available. Click here for more information.
