Janis Joplin: The Life And Soul Of A Rock Legend Explored At Adelaide Fringe

‘The Life And Soul Of A Rock Legend’ takes place at 2019 Adelaide Fringe.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The Garage International will be hosting a tribute to one of the most celebrated women in music, Janis Joplin, at the Adelaide Town Hall during Adelaide Fringe.

Presented by Wild Tongues Theatre, 'The Life And Soul Of A Rock Legend' depicts Janis at the towering peak of her brief career, a psychedelic foray into the experiences that took her to the centre stage of an era.

Delving deep into the darkness of a tumultuous calling, the show sets to highlight the struggles of a deeply soulful and intelligent woman in her emergence as a key figure in 1960s sexuality and expression.

Budding performer and founder of Wild Tongues Theatre, Samantha Hafey stars as the much celebrated singer, combining her personal affinity for the blues and Janis to channel the raw spirit of the Summer of Love.

Samantha was inspired to represent Janis on stage by a chance detour to Haight Ashbury while on a NYU study trip, the famed birthplace of hippie counterculture.

It was here the seeds of the beat and bohemian movements were watered, developing the wave of a revolution upon which Janis Joplin defiantly rode. In Janis' own words: “On stage I make love to 25,000 people; and then I go home alone.”

This is set to be an evening of wild passions, a vibrant retelling of one of the brightest stars' journey to becoming the emblem of a generation.

‘The Life And Soul Of A Rock Legend’ takes place (as part of the Frusic programme at Adelaide Fringe) at The Garage International 27 February and 1-2 March.
