It's harvest time for Brisbane music identity Deena Lynch as the career of her creative alter ego Jaguar Jonze begins to bloom.
“2019 was the year where all the many seeds I've been planting for years have finally sprouted a bit and it's been a really chaotic but an exciting time where I've been able to play gardener to these seedlings,” Deena says.
Deena has stepped away from her role as an artist manager to focus on her own songwriting and performance under the Jaguar Jonze moniker; Deena also has a photography project called Dusky Jonze as well as creating visual art under the alias Spectator Jonze.
“For Jaguar, some of my key moments this year have been playing BIGSOUND, which is something I've been applying for year after year; it was the first time I played as a showcasing artist and coming out on top with such great reviews and a great response has been a really heartwarming experience,” Deena says.
“I would have never believed you if you'd told me this late last year and I can't believe it's not even a year yet since – it's been a bit of a whirlwind and I'm really so grateful for how much support I've received from people in media and the industry and how they believe in the whole Jaguar Jonze world.”
Deena takes us further into the world of Jaguar Jonze with her latest single release 'Kill Me With Your Love', a song she says is about being caught in a toxic relationship.
“'Kill Me With Your Love' is about the draw to toxic relationships and how you put in all your effort to try and somehow believe that this toxic relationship is going to u-turn into a healthy, balanced one, but it never happens. You keep spiralling down, yet you're still drawn to the chaos and the 'passion' of it,” she explains.
“The song is a reflection on how prior to this year all I've ever really known is toxic love and toxic relationships, and when you only know that you keep falling into the pattern of it, thinking that the traits of a toxic relationship is what you truly want but it's really not true love at all.”
It's a strong start for Deena as Jaguar Jonze and it only gets better as she heads out on her own headline tour for 'Kill Me With Your Love' that takes her into early next year.
“I get to embark on my very own headline shows in February next year, so I'm looking forward to that because they are smaller rooms being my first headline tour but [those shows] are my favourite when it's a lot more intimate. I'm excited to see what 2020 will bring because I feel like people are starting to fall into the world with me, and I'm excited to keep exploring that.”
The tour also includes a spot at The Sound Society line-up at South Bank Parklands in December. “I love those kind of gigs,” Deena says.
“Brisbane is my home town and we get to headline, which is flattering and I'm looking forward to it because Brisbane is always somewhere that I'll keep coming back to and keep playing. You can't get rid of me.”
