It takes more than cancer to keep Jackie Marshall from writing music.
Heck, even after three bouts of it, it didn't stop her from writing and recording her new single, 'I've Been Wrong'. “I've been having a run at it [cancer] since my teens,” Jackie says.
“So the last one was breast cancer and I'm almost out the other side of that, fingers crossed. It's starting to get into Keith Richards territory; things keep trying to kill me and death does not want me,” she laughs.
'I've Been Wrong' is a country-flavoured affair that reflects what Jackie describes as some of the poorer choices she's made in life. “The more I think about it the more the song summarises where I'm at,” she says.
“I've probably lived a fairly bold life compared to some people and made some poor choices. So I'm just owning up to those things that have gone off the rails. I think a lot of people can relate to that experience, which certainly plants the song firmly in [the] country territory,” she laughs.
The song was written with her long-time friend Greg Cathcart (Silent Feature Era) and produced by Leigh Ivin who Jackie has worked with for much of her career. “He's built a fantastic studio out behind Tamworth, which sounds like it would be the perfect place for country music but he does a lot of indie music projects.
“He also plays in my band and has done so for the past couple of years. It's been a fantastic musical relationship and he's certainly looked after me through the ups and downs that I've been through the past few years.”

The new single comes from her forthcoming album 'Lilith Shrugs', which Jackie is still working on and says she hopes to release some time around March next year.
“We're going to test out a few songs from the album before we put it out and it's a very guitar-oriented album but the production ranges from 'I've Been Wrong', which has a bare studio sound, to a much more intimate, acoustic sound that people are familiar with when they've seen my solo show.
“A lot of the songs touch on themes similar to 'I've Been Wrong' and the album title itself is a marriage between the very forthright, traditional Hebrew goddess Lilith and a novel by Ayn Rand called 'Atlas Shrugged'.”
Jackie will be showcasing the new single and her other material on the 'Nine Lives/Endless Lounges' tour that she will be taking on the road throughout October and November.
Jackie says audiences can expect an evening of warm-hearted storytelling intertwined with her live music. “I think I tell stories that are very human,” she says.
“Some are personal and relate to people I've encountered but my main mission on stage - apart from presenting music beautifully and honouring the music - is to really get each room that I'm in to feel each other, feel connected and feel like this music is a way of releasing a few things and unloading a few burdens. The musical experience is an opportunity to feel a bit of a communal vibe.”
'I've Been Wrong' is available now.
