Dirty funk, spirited rock & roll and sleek, shiny grooves. . . Sydney funksters Jacket Weather are back with a sultry, three-track EP titled 'Memories'.
The trio, who formally played together as Groove City peddling their retro yacht rock bangers for six years, Jacket Weather announced themselves last year with the lush, cruisy swagger and sophisticated harmonies of 'Go-Go Boots'.'Memories' finds Calum, Daniel and and Dan in similar territory, the lads piecing together three jams about burgeoning love, the intoxicating feels that come when you meet someone new before things get tainted as both sides passion for the other wavers.
"The 'Memories' EP is the first instalment of a collection of songs that cover the reminiscing stage of loss of love," shares the trio.
Here, they break down the EP track by track.
The Girl Next Door
This was a doozy to write from start to finish! The first idea came on our very first jam as a band in 2019.Pistol started playing a riff and I started singing, in my mind, what 'White Flag' by Dido would sound like if it were a funk-rock tune.
A memorable moment was recording the guitar solo, as Pistol let loose and I ran the wah duties. Lyrically, this came from an experience Dan had about toeing the line between a casual and serious relationship, and everything that comes between!
Fall For You
'As Girl Next Door' set the opening scene, this is pretty much a direct continuation. Where intentions become less clear and a little more murky as the heart and soul show up to the game. The riff was inspired by Franz Ferdinand's 'Love Illumination'. Would have (always) loved to crank a sax in unison! Maybe one day live.
Memories
This is where everything takes a sombre turn and reveals that the first two tracks were from a movie flashback point of view, rather than real time.Pain, loss and heartbreak lead this track lyrically. All disguised behind the sweet, sweet pocket and blend of funk, rock guitars.
