Is This The Real Kyzer Soze?

Metal United Down Under returns in October for a day of metal festivities across the country, including a Brisbane show that will feature local, black metallers Kyzer Soze.

The group's guitar player, Tyler Welykitscholowik, is excited for the night – not only because of the event's line-up, which will also feature Holistic, Darkc3ll, Silent Knight and Antichrists Anonymous. “Recently, we've had a line-up change and became a four-piece. So we're been working on our live show with that in mind,” Tyler says.

The change came about because singer Dan Petley decided to take a different direction; the remaining four band members have all stepped up to the plate. “We've got three vocals now, a new dynamic and a new sound, it’s bit more atmospheric.”

And the windmills the band are known for will remain. “Windmills and intensity, that's what we were previously renowned for, and we're still trying to keep that same intensity.”

Tyler promises their sound is still as intense as the older stuff; still fast and heavy. But he does admit they’re heading more towards a black-metal direction. “On our album, ‘Ascension’, there’s a track, 'The Brethren', that was a little bit of a turning point for our sound. It's definitely changed. If people want to have a rough idea of what our sound is going towards, that would be 'The Brethren’ and 'Sacred Sermon’ off the album.”

Since receiving positive feedback with their ‘Ascension’ album, Kyzer Soze have spent a lot more time touring the country, without getting sick of each other. “We all get along pretty well. We’re brethren,” laughs Tyler.

And the story behind the band name? “Keyser Soze is a crime lord in the movie 'The Usual Suspects'. He's anonymous, no one knows who he is, but he's a brutal entity. We liked that concept and took the name but changed the spelling. We should have the little apostrophe above the e, but we don’t, we get away with it.”

As for the band's future plans, Tyler says they have a few. “We’re supporting At The Gates [1 Nov] with the Brisbane boys, Chronolyth. And we’re playing Ye Gods of Metal, and that’ll be us show-wise for the year. Then we’ll get some new tracks recorded with the new sound, try to release them next year and then hopefully tour again."

Kyzer Soze play Metal United Down Under at New Globe Theatre 10 October.
