Willow Beats are a Melbourne-based electronic duo that originated in the lush valley of Murwillumbah.
They sing songs about ethereal creatures and are influenced by the beautiful nature they were lucky enough to romp around in as young ones. Singer Kalyani introduces you to the band.
We sound like... A water nymph with a laptop.
Our first gig was... At our friend’s birthday party for fun.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... Initially Willow Beats was just Willow and it was only Narayana. Eventually I featured on most of the songs and we decided I should probably tag along. The name ‘Willow’ was taken on Soundcloud so Narayana added ‘Beats’ and the rest is history…
In the studio... I usually use it as an excuse for Narayana to make me tea!
If we could tour with anyone it would be... Bonobo. He has been an inspiration of ours for a long time and we would never grow tired of watching his live set.
Bonobo
Social media is... Dumbing us down. It narrows your sphere of thought when your head is filled with useless information. It’s an unhealthy addiction everyone has.
My favourite app at the moment... Is Instagram as it is the only app I use.
To date our most embarrassing moment was the time... That I shall not mention.
Life on the road can be... Exhausting, but it also makes you stronger.
If you'll have us on your bill we ask that our rider contains... A bathtub of milk and rose petals, champagne, a harp player, special cheeses and never-ending, peeled lychees!
The scariest scenario we've found ourselves in is... Trying to get to the airport on time.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... I would like to invite Bjork, Marilyn Manson and Sun Ra over for dinner to absorb a share of their imagination.
Marilyn Manson
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? We would make you mini pizzas with fresh herbs from the garden.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Coconut water.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... Year 10.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? Dishes! Duh!
Do you have any phobias... I have zero phobias because I live in the bush and having a spider in my bed is a nightly occurrence; snakes too sometimes.
Would you ever partake in a reality show? I would never partake in a reality show as I value my privacy and alone time way too much for that.
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? If I could prank anyone, I would give Tony Abbott an unexpected ice bucket challenge.
