While you unlikely to recognise the name Fletcher Moules, you will know his work as the director behind YouTube's billion-view 'Clash Of Clans' universe and Emmy Award-winning Netflix special 'Entergalactic' – you know, the one-off 2022 show starring Kid Cudi and Timothee Chalamet.
Fletcher's career traces back to his early days playing in bands in Sydney, notably winning triple j Unearthed with his band Vapoourware (who also gave Cut Copy one of their first support slots).
Now based in Los Angeles, after becoming a father, and the work he did alongside Kid Cudi creating 'Entergalactic', Fletcher has pivoted back to his first love of music circling back to a song he first wrote almost two decades ago under his new moniker, The New Condition.
'Maybe' was a song Moules never thought he'd share. It's the one song from The New Condition that comes from Moules' past. Built on nostalgic synth keys, crisp electric drums and an unfiltered vocal performance, 'Maybe' hovers in the space between joy and longing.
The song's accompanying video leans into Moules' filmmaking craft and the ongoing conversation about the ethical use of AI. Using his own images and licensed material as prompts inside Google's Flow Veo3, he shaped a surreal, cinematic journey that reflects The New Condition's mood.
"I think of these AI tools like making an animated film. To me, it proves AI can be a great tool that empowers independent artists to tell high-end stories, as long as it is created responsibly."
Who is... The New Condition is my creative project, a synth driven indie-rock band born in Venice Beach, CA. I'm Fletch Moules, originally from Sydney, Australia, and while most people know me as an Emmy-nominated animation director ('Entergalactic', 'Clash Of Clans'), music is my first love, and what drives all my creativity.
I played in bands as a teenager, won triple j Unearthed and played Homebake with my band Vapoourware many years ago, then stepped into film, and eventually came back to music with The New Condition. It's pop nostalgia that's deeply personal.
I sound like... Depeche Mode meets The Cure at a late-night beach bar, with New Order serving drinks.
Our first gig was... As The New Condition, house parties in Venice Beach, with shows booked for later in 2025.
When did you settle on the group's name, and was it a unanimous decision... The New Condition was a project that came out of knowing I was about to become a father. I knew that in nine months my world would change, and I'd be in a new condition.
This was the inspiration for writing and recording this entire album – there's nothing like a deadline right? Since The New Condition is essentially me, it was a pretty unanimous decision.
In the studio I usually... Get lost in synth sounds for way too long and forget to eat. Then right when I think I've got something I go back to the piano to make sure the song still holds up when you strip everything away. Sometimes that's a heartbreaking test. Time for dinner.
If I could tour with anyone... Back in the day, Cut Copy used to open for my old band Vapourware, before they were huge. Going back on tour with them after all these years would be pretty great.
Then I've also got to say Depeche Mode. Their fans would probably 'get' what I'm doing, but can their venues be smaller please? Like Depeche Mode & The New Condition at The Troubadour. ;)
Social media is... A necessary evil these days.
My favourite app at the moment is... Probably got to say F1TV, because I can't miss a lap.
To date, my most embarrassing moment was the time... Drunk and going in to high five Leonardo DiCaprio and missing – a total air swing. He told me to "look at the elbow," and to date I always have, and never missed again! Thanks Leo.
Life on the road can be... A wardrobe issue I've found.
If you’ll have me on your bill, all I ask is that our rider contains... A crisp dry Riesling, peanut butter and crackers.
The most scary scenario I've found myself in, was... Falling asleep on the freeway in southern France at 140kph. . . I was driving.
What celebrity/famous person would you love to be spokesperson of the band... Rhys Darby. He seems to have the chops of a great band manager/ spokesperson. Look what he did for Flight Of The Conchords! :)
If you had to live in a city abroad, where would you choose and why? Berlin or Mexico City – they're just the coolest places on earth.
Three people you'd like to invite around for a dinner party... Prince, Neil Armstrong, and Queen Elizabeth II. Prince brings the funk, Neil brings the space and the Queen? I feel like she'd secretly be the wildest one at the table once the third bottle of wine kicks in.
If we were coming over to your place, what would you cook us? Rotisserie chicken and an Asian-inspired salad. Always. It's my go-to; simple, crispy, and I'll pretend it was way harder than it actually was.
When it comes to pets are you a lover or hater of our furry friends? LOVER! Of course. All the fur balls are welcome. I'll probably leave the party early to hang out with my dog.
No matter the expense, send me a case of... Good wine and vinyl funk records. One for the ears, one for the soul.
The last time I saw the inside of a gym was... A few weeks ago. New Dad life really screws with your schedule; and your biceps.
What's the one chore you dislike the most? I can't say dirty diapers, can I? Not really a chore, just a reality. Fine. Folding laundry, it's purgatory with fabric softener.
Do you have any phobias... Cheese. Don't ask. Long, painful story. Yes, I know that sounds. . .
Would you ever partake in a reality show? For sure, but only if it's an adventure travel show like 'Race Across The World'. Drop me on a train through Mongolia with no wi-fi and let's go!
If you could prank any of your friends, who's your target, and how are you bringing them down? I'd prank my bandmates by replacing all their synth patches with '90s ringtone sounds, but then I realised I'd have to play them too. So. . . self-prank?
Best local takeaway joint for a midnight feed that will leave you with a food coma? Hinano's Burgers in Venice Beach. Always.
Which fictional character best describes your personality? Mr. Bean crossed with Ferris Bueller, because half the time I'm stumbling through life in ridiculous situations, and the other half I'm somehow talking my way out of them with a smile.
Last show you binge-watched? 'Foundation' S3. Because of Demerzel, well, and the fact that I still can't believe Isaac Asimov wrote all this in the 1940s. Crazy! The robots have got to rise. . . right? I also binged 'The Studio' and 'Severance' recently. Go Apple TV+!
